Peptide purity benchmarks every Southeast Asian lab should demand

HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, endotoxin, and water-content thresholds — what counts as research-grade for labs buying peptides in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Research labs across Southeast Asia — in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines — face a common problem when sourcing peptides locally. The regional market includes both research-grade and consumer-grade suppliers, and the vocabulary they use overlaps. A vial labeled 99 percent pure may have been tested against a benchmark that bears little resemblance to what a serious lab in Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, or Jakarta should accept.

This is a short reference for the actual numeric thresholds research-grade peptides should clear, and the methods that should produce those numbers.

HPLC purity

Reverse-phase HPLC purity is the headline number on every certificate of analysis. The research-grade threshold is 98 percent or higher for most clinically-relevant peptides, and 95 percent is the absolute floor for material a Southeast Asian research lab should consider buying. Below 95 percent, the impurity load is high enough that downstream conclusions about the peptide's biology become unreliable.

The HPLC trace itself matters as much as the headline number. A clean trace shows a sharp single peak with symmetric shoulders. A trace with a smeared front shoulder usually indicates partial oxidation; a trace with a tail usually indicates a related deletion sequence. A vendor who only sends the purity percentage without the trace is hiding something.

Identity by mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry confirmation is non-negotiable for any peptide sourced in Southeast Asia. The reported molecular weight should match the published value within typical instrument tolerance, and the spectrum should show the expected adduct pattern with no unexpected satellite peaks at unrelated masses.

Identity confirmation is the single most useful tool against outright counterfeit material. A vial labeled tirzepatide that reports a mass off by more than a few daltons is not tirzepatide, regardless of what the label says.

Endotoxin by LAL

Bacterial endotoxins survive lyophilization, and a clean synthesis can still arrive with elevated endotoxin if the fill happened in a marginal cleanroom. The research-grade threshold for most peptides is below 5 EU per milligram, with stricter requirements for peptides intended for in-vivo work.

Endotoxin testing is the most-skipped quality control on COAs sold in Southeast Asia. Insist on it. A vendor that does not test for endotoxin is asking the buyer to assume the upstream cleanroom was clean.

Water content

Lyophilized peptides should arrive with low residual water content — typically below 8 percent by weight. High water content means the dose calculation based on the labeled mass will be wrong, and the peptide will degrade faster in storage. Karl Fischer titration is the standard method.

This is a benchmark that consumer-grade suppliers routinely miss because they do not test for it. Asking for it is a quick filter.

Visual and dissolution

A clean lyophilized peptide is a uniform white or off-white cake or powder, dissolves quickly in bacteriostatic water with no cloudiness, and produces a clear solution with no particulates. Any deviation — cloudiness, slow dissolution, visible particles, off-color powder — indicates a quality problem regardless of what the paperwork says.

This is the single test every research lab in Southeast Asia can perform on arrival, and it catches a meaningful percentage of bad lots that pass paperwork review.

The benchmark, summarized

Research-grade peptides in Southeast Asia should clear: HPLC purity above 98 percent, mass spectrometry identity within tolerance, endotoxin below 5 EU per milligram, water content below 8 percent, and a clean visual and dissolution check. A vendor that delivers all five consistently is operating at research-grade. A vendor that delivers fewer is selling at a different grade, regardless of the price or the label.
